Perhaps it's a case of apophenia on my part, a romantic readiness to discover Cracky lurking in every moment; physically tuning myself to recognise her face in clouds, billowing smoke and burnt toast. Perhaps that's it, but maybe not. You see, when I view the works of Yoshitoshi ABe, the creator of Serial Experiments Lain, Haibane Renmei, etc, I see the Sky Queen. Maybe it's due to a common thread that connects many of his heroines, lonely, often depressed young girls in a world that they can't entirely understand or fit into, something I think we can all recognise in Cracky's photos. Yet, were that it, I doubt I would see Her in so many of his character designs (not those ABe has provided for the work of others, though it might be comforting to imagine Cracky in light of Welcome to the NHK with I'm sure a few of us being half-hikkys).
In despite of the title, I don't really have a conclusion to this, but merely a few images to suggest to you possible (in reality impossible for these were created before She posted) parallels in art. Certainly these considerations have deepened my appreciation of the respective works.
