Roles and points of view diametrically opposed to the ones we are naturally inclined to fulfill hold a special place in our psyche. Most people simply chose to ignore or defy that fact.
As a former (heh, "former", right) intelligence professional I can't help but feel drawn to the enigma that defies unraveling. I guess that it is all too easy to forget that not everyone feels the same way.
Anyway, spend some time any one of the western mystical and/or initiatory traditions (Masons, ect.) and you'll understand.
