I wouldn't say Usenet textgroups are that public or mainstream anymore. People nowadays almost exclusively use it as a file sharing system. There are a handful stubborn old folks who write in a some textboards, but only a few really popular topics prosper like politics and religion.
There's spam no doubt and yes the group would get spam but it's not from your ordinary haters_gunna_hate 13y old gorefag but rather from quite innocent bots who post the occasional makemoney scam or porn ad while not being aware one bit who the Skyqueen actually is.
I believe it would be quite peaceful over there. It would be good for both us and Usenet. We would save Usenet and do it a favor in preserving the original historical usage that is rapidly dying. It would be a cultural benefit.
