true utility must recognise the function of the higher feelings - release, liberty, dare i say catharsis. the higher feelings do indeed have a function. you can live without them, in a basic brain/heart-alive form, but i can't see anyone being truly mens sana without some form of emotional release. awe, fear, wonder, love: all these are required to free the feelings. we need wondrous things to be healthy. a strict utilitarian would have us on bread and water, but utility must take into account health. catharsis is healthy.
