I don't know how many of you have feelings for Cracky that are even approximately addressed by, or reflected in, this unusually violent and bitter Lied. I can only say that it has been a great comfort to me in the numerous aftermaths of my numerous crucifixions at the hands of the many apes and travesties of Cracky that I've had to do with over the years.

Roughly translated, the lyrics - a poem of Heine's - run:

"I am not bitter

With the magnificence of diamonds

I think there is an authentic co-existence of murderous rage and loving, nurturing pity in these words and in this music. The only appropriate attitude, as I say, if not to Cracky then at least to one or two people who've worn her make-up from time to time.
