Tip: if something sounds unlikely to be true, it's probably only said in a tongue-in-cheek manner. And asking if it is true will probably produce more stories meant in good humour.

If that something is repeated in several threads at different dates, then it is actually likely to be true (though there is still a slight chance that it is a long running in-joke/misinformation).

Consider that oldfags probably pretend to be newfags just for arusement.
One easily gets answers on here if you approach it as if it was an oracle: Do your research to not waste your questions, do not expect answers. Whining is annoying.
