Just caught up on the Hellraiser series, they seem to squeeze them out now and again without any warning.
Hellraiser 6: actually quite good, much better than 4 or 5, and thankfully veering away from the righteous punishment horseshit of 5 completely, and in fact seeming to mock the idea. It made sense, and twisted like a snake in a tumble dryer at the conclusion. Possibly the only good sequel in its own right. Had photogenic cast, deals with the demons, but no hint that the box was a choice for a thrill-seeker, the original premise of the series that seemed to go out of the window by Hellraiser 2.
Hellraiser 7: didn't make any sense, much more porn though, much more photogenic cast, totally garbled ending, totally incoherent throughout, exactly what you expect from a Hellraiser sequel, satisfyingly disappointing. No hint of deals with the demons, no hint that the box was a choice for a thrill-seeker, in fact just had the veneer of Hellraiser over another film. One with lesbians and a plot that made no sense. Achieved a plot twist. Just one. Twist was inconsequential to proceedings.
Hellraiser 8: goes for a Scream-esque, self-referential knowing irony, has Lance Henrickson in it and possibly the most photogenic cast of the series to make up for it. Genuinely takes the piss out of the zomg-mmorpgs-are-killing-our-kids bullshit, twists like a snake sitting on top of a tumble dryer at the end, but rather obvious conclusion after the central premise has been revealled, somewhat satisfyingly disappointing, tainted with a glimpse of a much better film somewhere under the surface. They seemed to crowbar the chain suspension scene into the precedings as if from another film, and it smacked too much deserved punishment when it occurred. No hint of deals with the demons, no hint that the box was a choice for a thrill-seeker.
